My son and I took a missionary on home assignment around her home town. Her previous employer's children gave us a delicious lunch in their family hotel. Over the meal I related how my husband's job offer led us to stay three hours away from the nation's capital for twelve years. It was only after I returned to the capital that I realize how blessed my children were in being able to grow up in a small town atmosphere.
Kenneth related how he interviewed his peers in a survey he had to conduct as a course assignment. He was shocked to find out that in the capital metropolitan area one guy was having sexual relationships with multiple partners starting at age thirteen. This "cool" guy even had a short affair with a married twenty eight year old woman while he was seventeen. In expressing his surprise, he actually loosened the tongues of his interviewees. They, guys and gals, actually told him that the juniors had progressed further at losing their virginity at age thirteen or younger.
Our host and hostess were planning to relocate their children from the capital back to their hometown (where we met) next year. What we shared with them strengthened their resolve to make the move.
Today I chatted with my friend who spent twenty years in Singapore before she returned. She happened to mention that she was worried about her cousin's girl who left home to study in a nearby college. As most young girls go, they dress like tarts. Each wear blouses that are cut lower and lower to reveal more of their very well endowed bosom. Some wear shorts that look like guys' swimming trunks. I unwound two nurses' lecture on contraceptives, told her about the unwed mother's refuge in a small town and how a person with some knowledge could get safe terminations to pregnancies in certain hospitals. If things are bad enough where we live, it could be worse in the next country down south. Her friend who is a medical Doctor personally diagnosed three cases of HIV within the past month. All three patients are girls under age twenty one who each had a single sex partner -- namely a boy friend whom they have intentions of marrying.
