(578) journey to the south by Annie Hawes

To me, Italy is a developed nation. It was fascinating reading how Annie who resides in the north sees the south of Italy.

Apparently the north is considered sophisticated and the south is wild. Even after years of pouring in millions of  lira into the southern region, it is still an underemployed area. Annie's boy friend almost opened his restaurant in the south but for the interference of the local mafia. Instead he opened it in the North where it is free of such influence.

Separated by less than a thousand Km, a married woman who immigrated northwards did not visit her siblings for twenty five years. It took the passing on of her brother to inspire her return for his month wake. While Annie was in for another steep learning curve in the intricacies of Italian rural life, it makes for me an interesting read. Finally I understand why there are so many Italian descendants in some parts of America. It was either living on little with sponging on the Government subsidies or outright immigration!
