A close friend's daughter married into a rather wealthy family. We will call her Kaisha. Her husband's unmarried brother supplied a spacious house for Kaisha and hubbie to stay in rent free. Her friends are rather envious that at one stroke she acquired a loving husband, a nicely renovated house to stay in and could spend her pay expanding her shoe and hand bag collection. As I was relating all these, my children were of the impression that she was most fortunate. But my husband said, "There is no free lunch in this world!"
Sure enough, half a year later, the hidden cost showed up. One Monday, we received sms to pray for Kaisha who was pretty sick with a flu on top of her usual morning sickness. That we did. A few days later, she got well but had to look after her husband who caught her bug. They fell ill entertaining out of town guests from the guy's side, after all they were staying in the family's guest house in the area. Both Kaisha and her husband have demanding jobs. They were barely out of their own honeymoon. Now I see how it is actually easier to buy one's own house and live on less disposable cash.
