My niece just returned from Canada after her graduation from college. It was a joyous ocassion. She has been away for four years. In between she did return during her vacations. As her parents have only one daughter, I suppose they heave a sigh of relief that the apple of their eyes did not tie herself with a faraway groom.
My cousin was not so lucky. He sent his only son to study medicine in China with the explicit instruction that the latter should not tangle with any girls in China. Sad to say, he fell in love with an only daughter from a far away province. The girl's parents objected like crazy, but to no avail. He came back to his internship only to rush back for some further training. Meanwhile both sets of parents are hoping that time and distance would eventually breakup the pair of love birds.
I suppose every parent who sends children overseas run great risks that they may not return. Yet the hope of a better future out weighs every possible risk. There are many gamblers by nature among us, I guess.
